Kamal Eshzhanov
Kamal Eshzhanov was detained on 20 July 2022 in connection with the Karakalpakstan unrest. He was one of 39 participants prosecuted in a trial that opened in Bukhara on 6 February 2023 regarding protests against proposed constitutional amendments affecting Karakalpakstan's autonomy. Eshzhanov was indicted under Article 244 part 3 of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan for participation in mass riots. He was initially sentenced to 6 years' imprisonment, which was later reduced to 5 years on appeal by the Supreme Court.
