A well-known public and political figure, former governor and ambassador, leader of the Egemen Kyrgyzstan party, and former Member of Parliament. In 2016, he was arrested and recognized as a political prisoner by the Committee for the Protection of Political Prisoners. On October 23, 2022, Bektur Asanov was detained in connection with the “Kempir-Abad” case, which involved opposition to the government’s decision to transfer the Kempir-Abad reservoir to Uzbekistan. During his detention, his health severely deteriorated following a fall that injured his cervical spine, requiring multiple surgeries. On February 7, 2024, due to his deteriorating health, he was released on a pledge not to leave the country, and his case was separated from the other defendants.
