Aibek Buzurmankulov is the former governor of Talas region, co-chair of the Erkin El party, and founder of the youth organization Ak Shumkar Kut. He has been targeted for his political activism, including his participation in the 2017 Freedom of Speech March and his opposition to the transfer of the Kempir-Abad reservoir to Uzbekistan in 2022. In the Kempir-Abad case, he was arrested in October 2022 and faced charges of organizing mass riots and calling for the violent seizure of power. During pre-trial detention, he suffered from inhumane conditions and underwent a 14-day hunger strike that severely damaged his health. He is currently under house detention while his case is under review.
