Rita Karasartova is a public figure, human rights defender, and Candidate of Economic Sciences known for her work in fighting corruption and promoting transparency. She has been targeted in two major political cases. First, in the "Kempir-Abad case" related to protests over border demarcation, she was charged with organizing mass riots and attempting to seize power. After being released to house arrest in 2023, she was detained again in April 2025 in connection with the "Tilekmat Kurenov case" after making public a letter from an activist. She faces charges of organizing mass riots and public calls for the seizure of power. International organizations have described these proceedings as politically motivated persecution.
